Day 28 Valletta 2 Sliema W 0

Sliema W Valletta

Valletta stepped up their title challenge when they scored a goal in each half to see off Sliema Wanderers 2-0 at the National Stadium.

The Citizens, inspired by midfield duo Hamza Barry and Alan Da Silva Souza, seized the initiative from the opening stages but they had to wait until the 40th minute to forge ahead.

Roderick Briffa picked Da Silva Souza inside the area and the Brazilian immediately transferred the ball towards the unmarked Luke Montebello who stabbed home from close in.

On the restart, Sliema tried to get back in contention and they came agonisingly close to an equaliser on 50 minutes when Ivan Woods saw his firm drive hit the bar with Valletta goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili beaten.

However, the Blues hopes of a recovery were ended three minutes from time when Admir Vladavic was shown a straight red card by referee Malcolm Spiteri after he hit Valletta midfielder Irakli Maisuradze.
In time added on Valletta sealed the points when Abdelkarim Nafti slid the ball towards substitute Lateef Elford-Alliyu who stabbed home from close in.

Valletta midfielder Hamza Barry was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
