Nicky, as he was fondly known by his many admirers, was arguably the most influential Valletta FC player in recent years. Born on August 26, 1966, in Pieta’, he began his football journey in 1983 with Msida St Joseph’s in the Second Division. His first-team debut came on January 8, 1983, in a 3-0 victory against Qormi FC.
At just 17, Saliba played with the composure of a seasoned professional, impressing club officials who quickly recognized his potential. By 1987, he had made 41 appearances for Msida, scoring 12 goals, firmly establishing himself as a key player.
As his reputation grew, major clubs took notice. Hibernians were the first to show interest, but Valletta swiftly outmaneuvered them and secured his transfer.
Valletta’s gain was a significant one. Over a remarkable 16-year career, Saliba earned numerous honors, including being named Footballer of the Year twice.
As an attacking midfielder with a knack for scoring crucial goals, Saliba guided Valletta through its most successful period. He made his debut for the club on September 20, 1987, against Mosta, and went on to play an impressive 387 competitive matches before retiring at the end of the 2002-03 season.
In the 1996-97 season, Saliba led Valletta to an unprecedented five major honors, and in 2000-01, the team achieved even greater success. Valletta won the league championship for the fourth time in five consecutive seasons, along with five other major titles. It was a stellar season, although bittersweet for Saliba, who suffered a serious injury that caused him to miss several key finals. Nevertheless, he returned in time to help Valletta secure the league title, Super Five Cup, and Super Cup.
On the international stage, Saliba represented Malta in 68 full international matches, scoring 4 goals. He also made four appearances for Malta’s Under-21 team.
A model of strength and consistency, Saliba rarely missed a game between 1987 and 1999. Unfortunately, an injury sustained later in his career plagued him until his retirement at the end of the 2002-03 season.
Nicky rejoined Valletta during season 2009 as Team manager. During season 2024-2025 Nichols Saliba was appointed as Vice President Sporting.
