Champions Valletta move to the top of the BOV Premier after a 2-0 result against Floriana yesterday. This is the fifth win in a row for the Citizens. The Citizens now await tomorrow’s encounter between Hibernians and Sliema W.
Valletta had striker Paulo Massaro missing from the squad; Njongo Priso replaced the Brazilian striker. Cleavon Frendo was also missing for the Citizens; Frendo is still recovering from an injury. Stefan Giglio and Andrew Hogg returned to the bench after both players recovered from injuries.
Floriana had striker Ryan Darmanin and Christain Caruan with the starting formation. Darmanin was then substituted on the 22nd minute due to an injury.
Valletta took the lead early in the match following a perfect run on the right by Roderick Briffa, the latter’s cross was met by the unmarked Njongo Priso who fired the ball home from close range. Floriana replied with a counter-attack by Marlon Briffa, his cross was met by Ryan Darmanin whose shot was dispossessed by defender Kenneth Scicluna. The Citizens nearly made it 2-0 on the 18th minute, Njongo Priso progressed on the right before producing a pass to Edmond Agius but his shot was easily saved by Glen Zammit.
On the 25th minute following a run from the right by Floriana’s Marlon Briffa his cross was met by Mauro Brincat who fired a shot towards goal which was saved by goalkeeper Nicky Vella. Valletta made it 2-0 on the 29 th minute; a corner kick by Gilbert Agius was headed home by defender Luke Dimech. On the 30th minute a free-kick by Pablo Doffo was saved by Nicky Vella.
Minutes later Floriana nearly reduced the gap following a perfect lob by Orosco Anonam that went over the bar. Valletta replied immediately, a cross by Dyson Falzon was partially saved by the Green’s goal-keeper; the ball reached the City’s captain who fired a shot from close which ended high. On the 43rd minute following a free-kick by Gilbert Agius, Jamie Pace tried his luck with a shot which hit the bar.
Early in the second half Roderick Briffa exchanged the ball with Edmond Agius, passed the ball to Gilbert Agius whose effort was easily neutralised by the Green’s goal-keeper. On the 79th minute, Dyson Falzon tried his luck had a shot which was blocked by a defender and off the rebound, Edmond Agius' effort was saved neutralised by goalkeeper Glen Zammit.
