Danilo Doncic was born in Vranje but spent most of his early life in Belgrade. He started his youth football career with FK Beograd before joining his first professional football team, FK Rudar Prijedor playing back then in the Yugoslav Second League.
 
Danilo continued his professional career with a famous Serbian football club FK Napredak Kruševac, FK Čukarički before returning to FK Beograd. Having spent the majority of his early football career in Serbia, Dončić decided to try the international waters by joining Valletta FC, winning all the Maltese Cups between 1994-1997.
 
In 1997, Danilo left Malta and joined top Bulgarian club Lokomotiv Sofia and continued his career by moving to Portugal playing for Imortal DC.
 
He returned to Malta in 2001 and spent five years playing for Sliema Wanderers F.C. where he won three league campaigns in a roll and one trophy. Dončić was also three times top scorer of the Maltese Premier League. 
 
Doncic ended his playing career with Sliema Wanderers playing a total of 133 matches and scoring a total of 93 goals at the age of 37.
 
Doncic decided to start coaching and soon after he retired as a player, he started coaching First Division side San Gwann F.C. in 2006. In the following season, he joined Floriana F.C. as a head coach. 
 
Doncic got invited by one of the best Serbian coaches, Dragan Okuka, where he accepted to become his first assistant coach in Doncic's ex-club PFC Lokomotiv Sofia.
 
Subsequently, Doncic moved on to a top Greek league team Kavala F.C. together with Dragan Okuka. After some time, Okuka resigned and Doncic continued working with Henryk Kasperczak till the year 2011.

At the same time, Doncic was contacted by Sliema Wanderers F.C. for the post of a head coach and he returned to Malta to take over his ex-team Sliema Wanderers F.C. from February 2011 till May 2012.  Danilo also coached Tarxien Rainbows between 2012-2013.
 
Between 2013-2014, Doncic was incharge of Mosta F.C. and St. Andrews F.C. (2014- Autumn 2014).[With start of new football season Danilo decided to accept an offer of Al-Najma in Bahrain (2014–2015) as Club Manager.[8] Following his successful year at Al-Najma, Danilo signed a contract with Ethnikos Achnas (2015-2016). 
 
Danilo returned back to the Maltese Premier League after reaching an agreement with St Andrews FC in 2016.
 
Danilo Doncic joined Valletta FC during December 2017, the holder of a UEFA Pro Licence, signed a contract till the end of season 2018/2019.
