Valletta FC appoint Antonio Jose Cardoso Mendes as their new coach Published on: 29-12-2020

Valletta FC have appointed Antonio Jose Cardoso Mendes, known as ‘Toze’ as their new Head Coach.
The 41 year old Portuguese from Guimarães, who most recently coached at Al Wehda FC, also had spells at Al Nassr, Liaoning and Vitória de Guimarães SC as Head Coach of their under 23s, 19s and 17s. During season 2013/14 he won the Under-17 Portuguese National Championship.
The Citizens are currently joint-eighth on 20 points, eight behind joint-leaders Hamrun Spartans and Sliema Wanderers. They had started the season under the guidance of Jesmond Zerafa and following his resignation by interim coach Gilbert Agius.
Valletta were looking to install a new first-team coach following the departure of Jesmond Zerafa and during the past few weeks, the club had made a shortlist of possible candidates for the job.
After a thorough evaluation, Mendes was put on the top of the list of candidates and earlier this week, the Valletta FC committee held talks with the former Vitoria Guimaraes coach.
Mendes arrived in Malta on Monday and led the team in his first training session as coach of the Lilywhites.
Mendes will make his debut for the Citizens in their first match after the Yuletide recess against ─Žamrun Spartans. Antonio Jose Cardoso Mendes signed a deal till the end of the season, with a club option for the next season.
