Valletta defeated Birkirkara 4-1 yesterday. This was the first victory for the Citizens against the Stripes following the 1-3 result in the third round. Brazilian striker Paulo Massaro had to be substituted early in the match after twisting his ankle in the early minutes of the match.
Luke Dimech and Roderick Briffa returned to their starting line-up after serving a one match suspension. Goal keeper Andrew Hogg was missing for the Lilly White’s, he is still recovering from an injury. Alan Tabone was missing for Birkirkara after receiving his fourth yellow during the Stripe’s last encounter.
Birkirkara took the lead on the 14th minute; Joseph Zerafa went past Justin Grioli on the right and crossed for Kiril Mihaylov who headed beyond Nicky Vella. Valletta responded with a fine run by Njongo Priso on the right but his cross was not met by Dyson Falzon.
Minutes later a perfect cross by Roderick Briffa was headed by Dyson Falzon but his header hit the crossbar. Valletta equalized on the 40 th minute, Edmund Agius progressed inside the Stripe’s area before serving the ball to Njongo Priso who went past goalkeeper Thomas Paris and placed the ball in the net. Valletta increased the score on the 43rd minute, Dyson Falzon was fouled inside the area by Trevor Cilia and from the spot Njongo Priso made it 2-1.
Early in the second half captain Gilbert Agius nearly scored following a corner kick that hit the crossbar. On the 49th minute Dyson Falzon’s shot hit the Stripe’s defender foot and was diverted into the net. On the 70th minute Valletta nearly scored another goal, Roderick Briffa passed the ball to Edmund Agius who served Njongo Priso but the latter’s shot hit the bar. Two minutes later Valletta scored the fourth goal, Roderick Briffa received the ball on the right flank beat four defenders entered inside the area and placed the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
