Valletta returned to winning ways yesterday beating Marsaxlokk 1-0. Substitute goal keeper Nicky Vella was the Citizens hero saving a penalty in the dying minutes of the match. Valletta now move three point behind leaders Hibernians who however have a game in hand next Monday.
Coach Paul Zammit had to make some changes from last week’s formation, Ian Zammit, Roderick Briffa and Andrew Hogg were all missing through suspension. On the other hand Marsaxlokk mentor Patrick Curmi had full squad at his disposal.
Valletta took the initiative early in the match, Dyson Falzon advanced on the left, sent a cross to Sebastian Monesterolo who hit the ball from close range and ended over the bar. On the 23rd minute Steve Bezzina’s cross found Sebastian Monesterolo who outpaced his marker but shot wide off the target. Minutes later Valletta nearly opened the score, a cross by Gilbert Agius was met by Edmund Agius whose sliding shot hit the crossbar.
Nicky Vella performed a fine save on Christian Cassar’s shot on the 31 st minute. Luke Dimech’s header ended high off a corner kick from Dyson Falzon. Valletta took the lead on the 46th minute, Dyson Falzon went pass three Marsaxlokk players after firing a powerful shot from long distance which ended in the back of the net.
In the second half Valletta nearly doubled the score, captain Gilbert Agius hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from the left. On the 48th minute a shot by Kevin Sammut was saved by goalkeeper Nicky Vella.
On the 74th minutes another shot by Brazilian Paulo Massaro hit the bar. Minutes later Njongo Priso nearly added the score for the Citizens after receiving the ball from Paulo Massaro but the ball was cleared by the Marsaxlokk defence.
On the 82nd minute Marsaxlokk nearly levelled matters, Chris Camilleri was brought down inside the area but the penalty was saved by goalkeeper Nicky Vella.
