Valletta returned to winning ways yesterday after eliminating Msida SJ 2-0. Striker Doding Priso returned for the Citizens after serving a two-match suspension. Coach Paul Zammit made some changes from last Monday’s formation against Birkirkara. Captain Gilbert Agius, Sebastian Monesterolo, Dyson Falzon and Jamie Pace started the match on the Bench while Stefan Giglio, Paulo Massaro, Njongo Priso and Ian Zammit were chosen with the initial squad instead. Msida SJ had striker Pedro Dos Santos Calcado missing through suspension.
Early in the match Edmond Agius served Cleavon Frendo but the latter’s shot ended high over the bar. On the 17 th minute goal keeper Andrew Hogg handled the ball outside the area and from the following free- kick the City’s goal keeper produced a fine save. On the 29 th minute Paulo Massor’s effort was cleared by goal keeper Matthew Camilleri following a fine move by Kenneth Scicluna.
Valletta took on the lead on the 30 th minute, a corner kick by Cleavon Frendo into the path of Paulo Massaro who headed the ball onto the oncoming Njongo Priso who tapped the ball home from close range. On the 32 nd minute Tyrone Farrugia’s effort was blocked by Andrew Hogg. On the 35 th minute a shot from Kurt Magro from the right was neutralised by goal keeper Hogg.
On the 43rd minute Stefan Giglio was giving marching orders by the referee following retaliation with player Andre Rocha Da Silva. In the second half coach Paul Zammit introduced Justin Grioli instead Brazilian Paulo Massaro. On the 86 th minute Roderick Briffa nearly doubled the score for the Citizens but his shot ended over the bar.
On the 88 th minute Valletta made it 2-0, a free-kick by Sebastian Monesterolo was partially saved by the Saints defenders on from the rebound the Argentinean striker placed the ball into the top of the net from inside the box. In the dying minutes of the match Roderick Briffa scored from close range but referee denied the score as Briffa was in an offside position.
